How often are guns used in self defense?

Wha is defensive gun use? It’s typically defined as using a firearm to protect yourself, your family, or other people from a crime. The gun could be fired or simply brandished. Examples include shooting an attacker in mid-assault or displaying a gun to discourage a burglar(Kohrman, 2022) .

DGUs, as these instances are frequently referred to, are difficult to quantify. DGUs are not normally categorized by law enforcement organizations as a separate category. Although states are not required to provide these numbers, the FBI keeps track of justified homicides, therefore the data is insufficient. Additionally, the FBI statistics do not include brandishings or defensive attacks, in which someone repels an assault.

Researchers who study gun violence and pro-gun advocates, who frequently use different sets of statistics, have been engaged in a heated argument as a result of this uncertainty. Gun rights activists point to a series of telephone surveys conducted in the early 1990s by a criminologist and self-described "gun control skeptic" by the name of Gary Kleck, while academics primarily rely on the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), a twice-yearly poll of crime victims conducted by the federal government.

Far fewer instances of defensive gun use are found by the NCVS. In self-defense, 2% of victims of nonfatal violent crime, such as rape, sexual assault, robbery, and severe assault, and 1% of victims of property crimes use guns, according to the most recent firearms violence report, which was released in April. The report found that defensive gun use occurred in 166,900 nonfatal violent incidents between 2014 and 2018, or an average of 33,380 per year. In 183,300 property offenses within the same time period, or 36,660 on average per year, defensive gun use was documented.

Together, those represent 70,040 incidents of defensive firearms use annually.

Notably, the NCVS statistic does not include instances of simple assault. Other warnings include: Only those who report having experienced particular crimes, such as rape, assault, burglary, larceny, or auto theft, are questioned about protective measures. Therefore, trespassing and commercial crime victims are not given the option to report the use of defensive weapons. Additionally, respondents aren't questioned specifically about weapons; instead, they are asked what they did to protect themselves or their property, and they are left to provide details.(Raphelson, 2018)
